The Day I Learned My Bike Rack Was Hiding My Brake Lights

The flashing blue lights behind me weren’t for speeding. They were there because the driver behind me couldn’t see my brake lights.
I was driving home from a ride with two mountain bikes on my hitch rack. The bikes weren’t moving and my bike rack was secure. From the driver’s seat, nothing seemed wrong. But when the officer walked up, he pointed to the back of my vehicle and said, “Your brake lights and turn signals are completely blocked.”
He was right. The bikes covered them almost entirely.
That moment changed how I think about bike racks. Most of us focus on securing the load. We shake the rack, double-check the straps, and make sure the hitch pin is locked. But we rarely step back 20 or 30 feet and ask a simple question: can the driver behind me clearly see when I brake or turn?
In most states, the rule is straightforward. If your bikes obscure your vehicle’s required lights or your license plate, you’re responsible for making those signals visible. The exact requirement varies state to state, so it’s always smart to check local regulations. But the safety principle doesn’t change. Your brake lights, turn signals, and running lights must be visible to the drivers around you.
When they’re not, reaction time drops. In traffic, that split second matters.
One of our customers, Mark, experienced that firsthand. He drives an SUV and carries two large mountain bikes. On his first road trip with them mounted, he was pulled over twice in one weekend. No ticket, just warnings. Both officers told him the same thing: when he hit the brakes, his signals disappeared behind the bikes.
He told me he felt frustrated and exposed. He had invested in quality equipment. He thought he was doing everything right. Instead, every time he merged onto the highway, he felt uneasy. Night driving was worse. He found himself glancing in the mirror more than the road ahead.
That’s the part people don’t talk about. It’s not just about staying legal. It’s about driving with confidence.
We helped Mark install a Kody Technologies light system that connects directly to his vehicle’s trailer plug. Now, when he brakes, bright LED lights mounted at the rear of the rack illuminate clearly and immediately. When he signals, drivers behind him see it exactly where they expect to see it — at the back of the load.
The difference was immediate. On his next trip, he told me the tension was gone. No more guessing whether someone could see him stopping. No more worrying about being rear-ended because his signals were hidden. Just clear communication on the road.
That’s the real benefit. You move from uncertainty to confidence. From hoping you’re visible to knowing you are.
If you carry bikes on a hitch rack, take a moment to check your setup. Step back. Turn on your signals. Make sure your lights and plate are clearly visible. If they’re not, fix it. Build safety into your system, not as an afterthought, but as a standard.
If you’re ready to make that upgrade, take a look at what we’ve built at Kody Technologies. We design bright, durable LED lighting systems that integrate cleanly with your rack and your vehicle. It’s a simple improvement that makes a real difference — for you, your family, and everyone sharing the road.
